What you need to know about detasseling:
A list of pick-up points will be posted on our homepage and you may choose where to be picked up. If a pick-up point is not specified, then we will choose it based on the detasseler’s school location.
The start of the season varies from year to year, and depends on several factors (i.e. weather & planting season). We will call you a few days before work begins and let you know where to go and what time (most times are between 6:45 am and 7:15 am).
Different detasselers prefer different types of clothing, but we recommend something like lightweight cotton pajama bottoms or nylon windsuit pants, and long sleeve t-shirts. Hats are also recommended. DO NOT wear clothing with any type of profanity on it, as you will not be allowed to work with such attire.
You will be walking miles each day in the beautiful soil of Indiana, therefore comfort is important. We recommend old tennis shoes. Remember to bring an extra pair of socks, so you can change at lunchtime. Your first pair of socks will be wet from morning dew.
You need to bring your own lunch! Please be aware of the extreme heat and be careful what type of products you bring in your lunch. Fruit and sport drinks are recommended. We will provide water, however for your benefit we recommend that you bring you own water cooler.
While detasseling may be fun, it is not exactly easy. We encourage you to get a goodnights rest, drink water the night before, and stay away from caffeinated beverages such as soda, tea, and coffee. Make sure you eat breakfast every morning as you will need plenty of energy!
We work in rain and extreme heat, so we encourage you to bring an inexpensive poncho when it looks as though it may rain. If it is raining in the morning, still go to the pick up point even if there is lightening. We do not work in lightening but we will find a field that is safe to work in.
How do I know if I am hired:
When your crew is activated, we will post start dates and times on our website at www.kerkhoffllc.com. We will let you know if there is a problem with your application.
On your first day you will be required to sign a one page rules sheet. These rules are for your protection and the protection of those around you. If you do not follow these rules, you may be terminated and required to stay with supervision at the bus until the end of the work day. Remember this is a JOB, come ready to work and you will have a great season with us.
Thank you for your interest and we look forward to working with you this summer!
